USF18 Eastern Area Championships

Over the weekend of July 27-29, the USF18 fleet returned to Hyannis Yacht Club, site of the 2011 North American Championship, to contest the 2012 Eastern Area Championship.  Anticipation was high in the lead up to the weekend, with strong contingents from Florida, New York, and Canada joining the local Eastern Area fleet, and bringing the registered boats up to 26.  Included in those registered were the top four boats from the 2011 North Americans, as well as six of the top ten from that championship.

Storylines were not in short supply, especially at the top of the fleet.  Would the Team Ronstan boat of Mike Easton and Tripp Burd avenge their second place finish at North Americans, and regain the waters of Nantucket Sound from North American Champ Robbie Daniels?  Would Bob Merrick and Tyler Burd break their string of second place finishes and take the Eastern Area title?  Would the young stars Taylor Reiss and Matt Whitehead show their mentors the way around the course?  All great storylines, and all to be decided over three great days of racing on the waters off of Hyannis.

looking for a really nice place to sail a long distance race. I think last weekend we found one of the most beautiful spots of Europe to sail a long distance. Gunnar and Frank teamed up for the first time together. We had two days of great sailing and a lot of fun on the water. The result is also beautiful, 2nd place.

USF18 Eastern Area ACWS Demonstration Event

Over the weekend of June 30- July 1, the USF18 Eastern Area Fleet had the tremendous opportunity to stage a demonstration regatta in front of the crowds attending the ACWS Season Finale in Newport, RI.  With the excitement for multihull sailing being generated by the new format for the 34th America’s Cup and the America’s Cup World Series, our fleet felt the ACWS Newport was an outstanding opportunity to show off the thrill of Formula 18 sailing.
The format for the event was simple- the F18 fleet would race on Saturday and Sunday morning from 10 am-12:30 pm, immediately before the AC45s took to the water, and mere feet from the spectators lining the shore at Ft. Adams.  With launch facilities at Sail Newport and Jamestown Boat Yard, the Eastern Area Fleet stepped up huge with 18 boats turning up to entertain the crowd before the America’s Cup racing began for the day.

NACRA F20 Carbon first finisher ROUNDTEXEL 2012

On Sunday June 10 2012, female helmsman Carolijn Brouwer (BEL) with crew Wouter Samama (NED) won the 35rd Zwitserleven Round Texel Race. Dutchmen Xander Pols and Stefan Dubbeldam took line honours on their NACRA F20 Carbon and finished second overall. They crossed the line after 2 hours 50 minutes and 21 seconds with a big lead. The race had a thrilling conclusion with close racing. Also it was the first time in history that world’s biggest catamaran race took place on Sunday.

Exactly at noon on Sunday June 10, 250 cats started in the prestigious catamaran race round the Wadden island Texel. Nobody crossed the line too early, which is a great performance. Current and wind from behind pushed the professional sailors and amateurs to the line. John de Vries and Diederik Pauli (Nacra F20 carbon) were in the lead on the first leg on the North Sea to the lighthouse, but had to give that up just before the first gate to William Sunnucks and Oliver Egan (GBR).
