Erquy/France, July 9 2010
On Friday July 9 2010, Team Boskalis Styles/Van West took bronze at the F18 Worlds 2010 in Erquy/France. Hugh Styles (GBR) and Ferdinand van West (NED) climbed to the first place today, but lost it in the third and final race. Multiple World Champion Tornado/F18 and double Olympic silver medallist Darren Bundock (AUS) decided to match race them, which caused a bad result for Styles/Van West. That is how Bundock and Howden won silver and the Frenchmen Olivier Backes and Arnoud Jarlegan gold. The second Boskalis duo Larsen/Van Leeuwen finished fifth.
Ferdinand van West explains what happened: 'We were leading after today's first two races. The committee started a third one only three minutes before the time limit. Darren match raced us and we ended up in the far back fleet." That was extra unfortunate for Styles and Van West, as they had a redress for race 8 and 9, when they could not compete after a collision with a media boat just after the seventh starting gun.
Protest
Van West: 'That redress is calculated with the average points over the final series, including the discard. We had only scored top four positions since yesterday, which was good for the average numbers. Darren was in third place and could not win the title anymore, but we were in a weak position. One bad score would have pretty big consequences for our redress calculation and therefore our series." Styles and Van West protested against the fact that the calculation included the discard, but lost it.
Gold fleet
Team Manager Gunnar Larsen (NED) says he has mixed feelings about the situation, but above all he is 'proud and happy' with the team performance: 'To finish third and fifth in this strong fleet of 159 catamarans, is a great result. Hugh and Ferdinand sailed really well, consistently and always on top of the game. Jeroen and I achieved our own goals and performed consistently as well. The circumstances weren't easy, so I am happy."
All four Boskalis Nacra Infusions managed to qualify for the Gold Fleet, despite the unsteady conditions. Larsen: 'Andrew MacPherson and Olivier Witteveen did not reach the top. The international level of the F18 class is still rising. I think it was just a bit too much for them. For Olivier it is only his first F18 season. Christa van Helden and Wilco Stavenuiter met their own target by getting into the gold fleet and they learned a lot about starts, tactics and strategy." The full results have still not been published, so exact positions and scores can't be given.
